The Whiskey Rebellion
In 1791, the US government instituted the Whiskey Tax, the first excise tax on a domestic product. The tax was intended to pay for debts incurred during the Revolutionary War. However, western Pennsylvania farmers rebelled, intimidating and harassing tax collectors, until George Washington himself led a militia troop to intervene. It was the first real test of the ability of our new government to collect taxes, and deal with violent uprisings.
Liberty Pole Distillery is located in Washington, Pennsylvania, the heart of the Whiskey Rebellion.
New Liberty Distillery (Kinsey) is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the US capitol during the Whiskey Rebellion
